Liberté #2
Len van Zyl, 2024
Acrylic and spray paint on stretched canvas, with layered stencils and gloss relief detailing
In Liberté #2, I wanted to give form to the tension between ideals and lived reality. The central figure — an elegant woman drawn in relief — became my personal vision of liberty: not a symbol carved in marble, but a being of flesh, fragility, and courage. Through her, I tried to capture how freedom feels — layered, contested, and luminous all at once.
The honeycomb patterns remind me of the invisible structures that both protect and confine us, while the drips and ruptures speak of persistence through imperfection. I painted this piece as both homage and question — to ask what liberty still means in a world that keeps redefining it.
I love using the honeycomb, as it is apparently the strongest form
